Meet the Spanish Designer Taking Over LA: Teresa Helbig

Teresa Helbig Runway Show, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid

Teresa Helbig is a name that brings elegance and bohemian chic together. Born and raised in Barcelona, she began pursuing her passion for fashion design at a young age, gaining inspiration from her mother who worked as a seamstress. After making a name for herself in the fashion industry, she now celebrates 25 years of her namesake label. Showing her designs in more than 16 runway shows so far, it’s no secret that Teresa Helbig’s designs are truly one of a kind!

What sets Teresa Helbig’s creations apart from others is her exquisite attention to detail. By experimenting with different fabrics and materials, her hand-crafted pieces are created by paying attention to every piece, yet forming designs that have an effortless aesthetic and worldwide appeal. LAFM had the chance to sit down with Teresa and her amazing team, and understand how she’s able to incorporate multiple visions and hard work into completely unique and stunning designs season after season.

Her latest collection for Fall/Winter 2019, “I Put A Spell on You,” was showcased in West Hollywood, CA at Church Boutique as part of her eager transition to the United States with the help of Liza Vassell. Featuring leather prints with dragons and owls made through innovative laser-jet technology, as well as hand-sewn thread designs of boats and fireflies, “I Put A Spell On You” is truly a masterpiece of fashion. Teresa’s inspiration for the collection combines mystery, witches, and female empowerment, so it’s safe to say all of us at LAFM have become Helbig-obsessed!

While Teresa lives and works out of her atelier in Barcelona, neither she nor her designs are a stranger to Hollywood A-listers, as they’ve chosen her looks time and again for red carpets, press interviews and much more. Counting Queen Letitzia of Spain, Halle Berry, Angela Bassett, Zendaya, Elle Fanning and Priyanka Chopra as fans, the hand-crafted creations can only be purchased online or by booking an appointment at the Teresa Helbig Showroom in Barcelona.

“I only hope to continue to dress empowered and beautiful women for as long as I can,” Helbig replied when we asked how she felt about stars-and royalty-wearing her designs. In continually creating timeless pieces, her inspiration changes but one saying is ever present in her mind, “You cannot look to your future without first acknowledging your past.” It’s no surprise that her clothing is made and worn by women who treasure art, embrace feminine power, and have a yearning to make a difference, as Teresa Helbig and her designs embody just that.

A household name in her home country of Spain, Teresa Helbig is also a friend and go-to designer for Spanish actresses and women including Macarena Gomez, Marta Nieto and of course Queen Letizia of Spain who make up the #HelbigGang. She’s been honored twice at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid, and with her brand continuing to grow each year, “there’s never a time to settle, I always look for improvements no matter how big the milestone may be!” Helbig remarked.
