Highlights from MODALISBOA Autumn/Winter 2018

The aim is not to live forever. But create something that lasts forever.

In 2018, MODALISBOA continues to live with the same ambition and purpose: to create forever. Offering the conditions that invigorates the artistic creation of national fashion, discovering the artists that will be part of our cultural scene in the future, assuring the freedom that enables fashion to be unexpected, challenging, refreshing and unpredictable.

This is how MODALISBOA N.50 was, with the presentation of the Fall/Winter 2018/19, in Pavilhão Carlos Lopes, in the 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th of March.

After 25 years of existence, MODALISBOA reached edition number 50. An edition with a round number, of celebration, that intends to go beyond the simple accounting and historical event. N.50 was not about nostalgia, but about missing already the future. A future that no one knows but which all ambition – to be fast and quickly shareable.

Because to do fashion is no longer just producing fashion, it is about challenging concepts, reframing models, to break the rules and, sometimes deny and deny what lies behind. N.50 sumed up the quintessence of MODALISBOA, summoning the renewal and the inspiration of those who believe talent is organic and spontaneous, and that an artist signature always reflects the group and the community where it comes from and very rarely only the one individual. MODALISBOA N.50 challenged us to look at the world in a different way and with a different rhythm, to recognize a new movement of tendencies, a different intensity of time, and even perhaps the end of creation seasons, as we know them.

Yet, to create forever one has to continue to want to create evermore.

On the stage credited creators were gathered along with LAB and Sangue Novo, heirs of a tradition that is the artistic freedom provided by ModaLisboa in its 50 editions.

This freedom is reflected in the themes suggested by some of the creators, from the twenties brought by Duarte to the silent movie of Aleksandar Protic, along with the boreal auroras of Gonçalo Peixoto or the sixth sense by Filipe Faísca. David Ferreira presents for AW18 a woman, who gets inspiration from her grandma’s wardrobe, in order to inspire the millennials, as representation of the permanence and continuity usually demanded by fashion. Carolina Machado recovers the theme of love as “object and obsession”. Kolovrat proposal is the “changing realities”. Luís Carvalho is inspired by the buildings and lights of the big cities, by the silhouettes, materials and graphics of the 60’s. Dino Alves refers us to the present and to the transformations of the society: “The world has changed, we all know. For the better in many things, but also for worse in so many others! However, there is an issue that we should preserve and maintain. The truth, which at the moment seems to be just the other. The other truth!” Olga Noronha rehearses Freud’s “unsettling uncertainty” when the human being is confronted with a reality that is mystery and imagination, like a waxwork museum. Or, why not, a catwalk.

SANGUE NOVO IN MODALISBOA

At a time when changes in the paradigm of fashion as we know it are debated, ModaLisboa continued to believe that it is always its renewal that we must celebrate. Because even if one day Fashion as we know it disappears once and for all, we know that it will continue to be reborn every time it is necessary, as long as the conditions of freedom that allow it to flourish are provided.

It is in the creation of life and in the life of creation that they remain working in Sangue Novo, the space where Fashion as we know it is renewed by fashion and designers that make themselves known for the first time in all editions. Because in all editions, talents are discovered, collections are renewed, language and passion are expressed for Fashion.

As one of Sangue Novo designers, Federico Cina, confesses “Waking up in the morning, knowing that I can design and create something new and have the opportunity to express myself by dressing people with my emotions is very rewarding.”
