The 29th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) is pleased to announce two special showcases, a special selection of American Classics from UCLA Film & Television Archive, and another on Indonesian Cinema as the focus of the CROSSCUT ASIA section. These two are in addition to the previously announced focus on two iconic Japanese directors, Mamoru HOSODA and Shinji IWAI, and the world premiere of Asian Three-Fold Mirror 2016, the first of the Asian omnibus film series being made in collaboration with The Japan Foundation Asia Center.

The 29th TIFF will take place October 25 – November 3, 2016 at Roppongi Hills and other venues in Tokyo.

TIFF will present yet another Special Program featuring American Classics, following the Film Treasures from the Museum of Modern Art program in 2014 and the Orson Welles: The Known and the Unknown program in 2015. This year we have partnered with the prestigious University of California, Los Angeles, located right next to Hollywood and known for its many world-renowned film alumni. The UCLA Film & Television Archive will bring to Tokyo the restored masterpiece My Darling Clementine (1946) by John Ford and other American classics dating from the silent era up to the 1980s.

The Japan Foundation Asia Center’s CROSSCUT ASIA series showcases Asian films with a focus on particular countries, directors, actors or themes. Following the first and second editions, which featured Thailand and the Philippines, respectively, the third edition’s focus will be on Indonesia, a country whose cultural diversity is unparalleled. The section will feature works from numerous young filmmakers who richly portray themes relevant to modern society, such as religion, ethnicity, gender and various forms of love.
