Famed model Natalia Vodianova had her fifth baby in early June. Yes, you read that correctly, her fifth baby! She welcomed a healthy baby boy with partner Antonio Arnault, and has continued to work while taking care of her five children. Natalia has managed to raise her children, work as a model, and be an international philanthropist. Amazing, right?
Most women are not in the public eye, so becoming pregnant while employed is usually common. But for models, body image is more important than for the average woman. So how do they do it? Well, in the past few years, pregnancy in the fashion world has become normalized, even celebrated. In 2010, model Adriana Lima was called to work in the spring Givenchy show, even when she was visibly pregnant. The same year, Jean Paul Gaultier featured Jourdan Dunn with her baby bump in the spring show. Expecting models have been featured in shows and magazines almost yearly since.
Models have been criticized for baby-bumps that seem too small, and even for weight gain during and after pregnancy. This type of criticism is shared among all women, with body shaming being so common. Every woman’s body responds differently to pregnancy, and as long as the baby is healthy and loved, that’s all that really matters.
