With spring coming to close it’s time to refresh our wardrobes and step out that door in glorious Technicolor perfection!
Looking back on the Spring-Summer 2016 fashion shows that had us so excited a few months ago, it’s time to channel our inner fashion gurus and show off our love of all things runway by sporting some of the season’s favorite trends.
Now, can anyone walk down the street wearing a floor-length, ruffled, fitted Balmain gown every day? No, not really, but as every fashion enthusiast knows by now, it’s more about incorporating elements of the trends you love into your style. If Alexander Wang’s urban sportswear collection and Saint Laurent front man Hedi Slimane’s tribute to the LA surfer culture are any indication of what’s in this season, it shouldn’t be difficult at all to translate some amazing spring 2016 fashion trends into streetwear.
1. Sheer, Lingerie-Inspired Daywear
Lingerie worn as daywear has been all over runway shows for the 2016 Spring-Summer collections. It seems it’s the season to sport your sleepwear with pride. You have to love this trend because it’s so incredibly versatile. You can pair a delicate sheer top or bodysuit with virtually anything from a form-fitting skirt to a baggy pair of jeans and get in tune with this trend. Dress down a see-through lace dress with some army boots or a leather jacket and get the full grunge princess effect out of your outfit.
2. Colorful Knitted Mesh
In keeping with the show-some-skin vibe that the lingerie daywear inspires, you can’t help but give mesh a second look this spring. From Balmain’s curve-hugging knitted mesh bodysuits to Alexander Wang’s mesh tops and Alexander McQueen’s fishnet dresses, it’s clear to see that fashion designers have fallen in love with see-through, knitted designs for spring collections. In bold colors, stunning white, or timeless black, this fun fabric will be a great option for warmer days. Whether you decide to sport a full mesh bodysuit or accessorize a mesh top with a high-waist boyfriend jean, it’s safe to say this is one trend that can be turned from runway to streetwear and back with little effort.
3. Off-the-Shoulder Everything
Off-the-shoulder designs were spotted in 2016 Spring-Summer collections across the runway shows so this is one style to keep an eye out for this spring. Daring low cuts or romantic, Spanish-inspired dresses, as long as it’s off the shoulder you can pretty much pick your poison when it comes to incorporating this trend into your street-ready outfit. You probably won’t walk out of the house in a ruffled flamenco dress. But a bold, colorful off-the-shoulder top will pair well with anything from a flared skirt to a pair of darker skinny jeans. If you’ve got a love of the dramatic, dressing down a romantic off-the-shoulder dress with some slip-on shoes can also be a great way to pull off a street-friendly version of this trend.
4. Victorian-Inspired Elements
Don’t panic, you won’t need a corset! Victorian-inspired designs have been very popular with fashion designers for 2016 spring collections, so Victorian elements are worth mentioning. Now, you could look at Erdem’s sheer, floral, high-neckline dresses and think that this trend isn’t for you, but don’t be so quick to disregard some of the more edgy Victorian-inspired designs that you can draw from. For example, Fendi’s colorful, puffy-sleeved, high-neckline dresses and tops are worth a second look. Structured and bold, the dramatic tops can complement anything from a short-skirt to a pair of skinny jeans. Simone Rocha’s plain, over-the-knee, dresses also boast some amazing puffy sleeves that keep it simple and sweet. As is the case with every trend, the most important step is to pick the elements that you love and to work them into your style.
